Situated on the shores of West Lake, the Hangzhou West Lake Museum, founded in 2005 as China’s first museum dedicated to lacustrine ecosystems and recognized as a National First-Class Museums, has recently undergone a comprehensive renovation. The upgraded facility now features an innovative exhibition framework that integrates physical artifacts, interpretive texts, scale models, immersive environments, and multimedia installations.
Advanced technologies—including lighting systems, and audio-visual displays—seamlessly blend tangible objects with digital recreations. Drawing on interdisciplinary perspectives from geology, ecology, cultural heritage, and folk traditions, the museum now delivers a scientifically grounded yet accessible interpretation of the lake’s evolutionary narrative.
